Menopause is often thought of as the stage in a woman’s life after menstruation and fertility cease. Menopause is often associated with symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats and emotionalness. Menopause occurs naturally and somewhat gradually to all women when their two ovaries deplete of eggs bearing follicles and the ovaries are no longer producing significant female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Menopause occurs surgically and more suddenly if the ovaries are removed by an operation such as hysterectomy. It is due to the loss of these female hormones that women experience the symptoms of menopause. It is due to the loss of these hormones that women go through a physiological changes in the bone leading to decreased bone density and potentially osteoporosis. It is due to the loss of these hormones that women go through a physiological changes in the vaginal skin lining leading to vaginal atrophy, dryness, discomfort, vaginal infections, and loss of bladder control.
